Year 10 Retreat at Tyalgum Ridge Retreat – 12th and 13th June
Thanks to Year 10 students, and generous staff, who took part in a refreshed ‘retreat experience’ at the end of last week. The theme of the retreat was gratitude for what we have leading to service. All participants were sent in groups to a variety of venues on Friday 13th June to offer their help and assistance in different ways. I was with a group who visited the elderly at Heritage Lodge in Murwillumbah. All of the students are to be commended on the way that they engaged in conversation and activities with the residents and staff.

The group who came back to the College for their service activity were commended on their generosity in helping the bus drivers unload everyone’s bags (there were plenty!). They then cook pots of Pumpkin Soup and Butter Chicken to cater for the parishioners at Saturday evening’s special Doyle and Loreto House Parish Mass. Thanks to Mrs Finkel and Ms Molloy for their logistical skills, energy and determination to make the two days memorable for Year 10.

Doyle/Loreto Parish Mass – Saturday 14th June
Thanks to House Leaders Mrs Cripps (Loreto – Marine Blue) and Mr McCulloch (Doyle - Magenta) for enthusing their respective students to be involved in last Saturday night’s Sacred Heart Parish Mass. Ex-student, well-known singer/songwriter and Youth Minister, Laurie Pratt, lead the music. Current students and staff read the readings and Prayers of the Faithful while others took up the Offertory Gifts to Fr Peter. Mass was followed by a light supper of soup and curry, prepared by a Year 10 ‘service’ group on Friday 13th June. Thanks to Ms Molloy, Mrs Cripps, Mr McCulloch and Thomas for their organisation and to all the College students, parents and staff who attended on quite a cool evening.

NAIDOC Week Assembly - Monday 30th June
The final week of this term coincides with the national celebration of NAIDOC Week. At the College AEWs, Tayah Logan and Madi Van Rosi, are busily preparing an outdoor celebration assembly followed by lunchtime activities for Monday 30th June commencing at 12.15pm. Many special guests have been invited to enrich our celebrations. Let’s hope that the weather is kind to us and our plans!

Perm-A-Pleat
College uniform suppliers Perm-A-Pleat will close for their annual mid-year break from Friday 11th July to Monday 28th July, 2025. To ensure dispatch before the break, please place online orders by COB on Wednesday 9th July. Thereafter, orders will be dispatched from Monday 28th July.

Staff Development Day first day of Term 3 - Monday 21st July
This is the first notification to parents that the first day of Term 3 2025, Monday 21st July, will be a Staff Development Day. As such College students are not required to attend school on this day.

The focus of the day will be on implementing new curriculum. It will enable significant blocks of time to allow staff to collaborate in their Key Learning Area group/s to develop new and exciting programs. It will be a valuable opportunity which will ultimately benefit your child/ren.

The first day of attendance for College students in Term 3 is Tuesday 22nd July which is Day 17 (Week D) of the timetable.

Assistant Principal - Learning and Teaching

It's a very busy time in Learning and Teaching at Mt St Patrick College at the moment.

Year 7-10 have completed assessments and the teachers are busy providing feedback to the students on their achievements and how they can grow in their learning. Reports are being prepared and parents will have the opportunity to attend Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences for Years 7-10 on Tuesday 29th July from 3.30pm. Please take advantage of the opportunity to meet with the teachers and collaborate with them for the benefit of your student/s.

Year 12 have returned from their retreat invigorated and are currently attempting their final HSC Assessments before the HSC Trials. I acknowledged the pride that these students take in their uniform and in the way they conduct themselves during their assessments. After these assessments each student will be allocated a mentor to offer support in how the students are tracking towards their goals.

Year 10 have continued on their journey in preparing for the next stage of their education. A well-attended parent information night informed the parents of the opportunities at Mt St Patrick College in Stage 6. The students are filling in surveys about their interests and goals. Leaders of Learning will give recommendations on these surveys and return them to the students. An interview day for parents and students will take place in the Learning Hub on Tuesday 22nd July to discuss the student’s goals and then students will make subject selections which form our lines for 2026. We look forward to journeying with the students and parents through the process.

Year 8: There will be a meeting for Year 8 parents and students about elective offerings for Year 9 and 10 on Wednesday July 2nd in the Gilbey Centre at 6.00pm. This is an exciting time for the Year 8 students as they have the first opportunity to select their subjects. Mt St Patrick College is revitalising their elective choices and along with our traditional electives we are introducing microcredential course that provide students with credentials other than their HSC. This year we have trialled a new course called DIY. The students are developing skills in Car Maintenance, Landscaping and House Maintenance. Recently students learnt to change a tyre and have poured cement pavers. Feedback from the students is that they are enjoying the new style of electives and are very engaged in them.

Pastoral Care

We recently had the privilege of hearing from Melissa McGuiness, a mother who shared a deeply emotional and impactful message with our community. Melissa’s son, Joshua, was only 18 and a half years old when he made the tragic decision to drive after drinking at a work Christmas party. This one poor choice resulted in the loss of his life and the lives of four other young people.

Melissa’s message goes beyond the dangers of drinking and driving. It is a heartfelt call to all our young people to think carefully about their decisions. Every action is a choice — a ‘YouChoose’ moment — that can affect not only your life but also the lives of those around you.

We encourage all students and families to reflect on this important message: Choose wisely. Don’t let one poor decision be your last.

Legal Studies Excursion: A Day in Sydney Exploring Law and Government

On Thursday 5 June, Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students took to the skies for an action-packed day in Sydney, exploring the real-world application of Australia’s legal and political systems.

The day began at NSW Parliament House, where students deepened their understanding of key constitutional concepts such as the separation of powers, the division of powers, and the electoral system. These essential syllabus topics came to life as students observed the functioning of parliament and legislative debate in action.

A highlight of the morning was meeting with local MP and Minister for Small Business and Recovery, Janelle Saffin, who generously shared insights into her dual role as both a representative of our region and a key member of the executive government. Her candid discussion gave students a deeper appreciation of how parliamentary and ministerial responsibilities intersect.

Students also had the unique opportunity to witness Question Time in both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. The atmosphere was electric—at times rowdy—and gave students a memorable glimpse into the lively and sometimes chaotic nature of democratic debate.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Supreme Court of New South Wales, where students observed bail hearings, pre-trial motions in civil cases, and property dispute proceedings. Seeing the legal system in practice helped solidify classroom learning and gave students a tangible understanding of both criminal and civil procedures.

The excursion provided an invaluable, immersive experience that connected classroom theory with real-world law and governance. Our students conducted themselves with enthusiasm, maturity, and genuine interest—an excellent reflection of our school community.

MUSIC

HEADPHONES FOR YR 7 AND 8 MUSIC CLASSES

Just a reminder to parents that it is an expectation for each child to have a set of headphones for Year 7 and 8 Music classes. These headphones need to be ‘wired’, (not bluetooth) to be compatible with our keyboards. Thank you for helping your child come prepared for learning.

FROM THE SPORTS DESK

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Our annual College Athletics Carnival will take place on the first Friday of next term, 25th July. This takes place at Walter Peate Oval Kingscliff. A lot of our students and families come from Pottsville, Cabarita, Casuarina and Kingscliff and as such these students if they can get to Walter Peate with parents instead of catching regular buses to school and then back again will be able assemble at the grounds from 7am if convenient for parents. Staff will be there at that time to set up for the day and in past years those students who arrive early have been an amazing help in assisting this also.

For all other students, come to school as normal and buses will ferry you to the ground and the carnival will start at approx 10am. Next week a survey will be sent to parents to gauge their intentions as to how your son / daughter intends to get to the carnival. This information will be passed on to our bus company so they can make plans top transport all of us to the venue. Thanks for your assistance on this.

A friendly reminder that the athletics carnival is a compulsory school day, a fantastic day to showcase our tremendous College spirit and the amazing talented athletes we have at MSPC.

Also parents, can I ask that we limit removing students from the event during the day unless for exceptional circumstances. No student will be allowed to leave unless they are marked out as leaving by our attendance officer Mrs Lesa Swift who will be present and parents will need to see her directly to collect their children

PHIL TOBIN SHIELD OPEN LEAGUE

The Opens Rugby League team made their way to Woodlawn College on Wednesday 11th June for a much-needed hit out. After Yr 12 Retreat and Yr 11 Camp interrupting previous opportunities to play for the Phil Tobin Shield, the sun was shining for a fantastic day of Rugby League.

The teams’ first match was against Xavier Catholic College, Ballina. In a close fought affair, the team from MSPC went down 10-6. After a slow first half the team was down 6 nil at half time. Xavier got the ball back from the kickoff and extended their lead to 10 nil. A great passage of play led to a great try to Angus Lindsay to get the team back within a converted try. Unfortunately, the team bombed a try in the corner in the final minutes to level things up.

The final match of the day was against St Mary’s Catholic College, Casino. The team started off in fantastic fashion jumping out to a 12 nil lead. Tries to Kye Thierjung and Simon Smith, along with pinpoint kicking from Max Palmer, set up a good lead going into the second half. The team from Casino came out with a lot of energy to begin the second half, fighting back to 12-10. A final team play that ended with Darcy Irby scoring under the posts sealed the win for the boys, 18-10.

All the young men from MSPC should hold their heads high after coming together at such short notice. A big thank you to the Yr 12 Boys who may have played their final game for the College. Well done!

Q - SCHOOLS CUP SENIORS

Girls

On 12th June, MSPC Senior Girls AFL team headed to Byron Bay for the Q Cup carnival. Some of the girls had never played AFL before but were mentored wonderfully by their peers and their coach Abbey Bevan. Excitement levels were almost as high as the nerves.

We knew that the first match would be the toughest as we faced Lindisfarne, who went on to beat every opposition convincingly on the day. Not to be deterred, the girls bounced back and, with a bit more of an idea of gameplay, fought hard against Kingscliff eventually going down by just one goal.

Buoyed by this performance, the team stepped onto the field against St Joseph’s College feeling much more confident in their abilities. Some wonderful play out of the middle by Billi Hutton and Phoebe Piticco led to some fantastic scoring opportunities. We won that game 38 – 0 and this goal advantage propelled us into 3rd place.

Our final game of the day was against Xavier where the girls once again put on a strong winning performance.

Each player was exceptional, bringing the terrific Mt St Pat’s spirit to every aspect of the day. Shout out to all of the players for bringing their best selves on the day. Great thanks to Abbey Bevan for teaching the team that AFL can be fun and for showing us how the game should be played.

Patties on three – 1, 2, 3, Patties!

    Michelle Delaney

Boys

On Thursday 12th June, the MSP College Senior Boys AFL team competed in the QSchools AFL Cup held in Byron Bay. The boys were eager to finally hit the field together after several postponements, and their enthusiasm showed from the first bounce.

MSPC started strong with a solid win over Lindisfarne, finishing 2.5 to 1 goal. In the second match, the boys narrowly went down to Kingscliff High, 1.1 to 2.4, in a closely contested game. However, they bounced back emphatically in the final round game, recording their biggest win of the day against Trinity College with a dominant 7.3 to 1 goal performance.

This outstanding result secured them a spot in the Grand Final, a rematch against Kingscliff High. Despite their determination and effort, Kingscliff proved too strong, claiming the win by two goals.

Best players on the day included Jai Brennan, Tex Mikkelsen, Angus Lindsay and Joseph Maynard, who all put in standout performances.

Congratulations to the team on a great day of football!

Rick Van Den Driest and Jake Hetherington

DIOCESAN NORTH OPEN FOOTBALL

Boys

After a lengthy wait from their original date and several other postponements, the weather came to the party and allowed us a fantastic day at the Opens Soccer Carnival.

It was a busy day and with only 2 reserves, our open boys side were always going to be up against the odds.

Game 1 against Trinity was a back and forth affair. Both teams probing but struggling to convert. Trinity had already played a game and seemed a step ahead of our boys as we slowly warmed into the day. Trinity broke the deadlock late in the first half and tactically set a defensive lineup in the second. Unfortunately, we were unable to break through and lost 1-0.

Game 2 against McAauley, Grafton could be described in one word - tough. Both teams were physical and wanted it as much as each other. Despite some early chances and some brilliant saves by our captain, Charlie Twohill, we held our nerve and the scores to 0-0 at the break. Late in the second half, a fumble from their keeper and some good pressure from Stephan Pelikan resulted in us taking the win 1-0.

Game 3 against Xavier was always going to be a test. Both teams counter-attacked well and scrambled in defence. Opportunities and near misses rained on both sides. A loose ball in the box, and a missed clearance, saw Xavier score a sloppy goal late in the first. The second half continued on the same theme. Scrambling defence, strong counter attacks and near misses. Neither team could capitalise and Xavier took the win 1-0.

Our final game against Woodlawn had no implications for our progression, however Woodlawn needed a victory to win the day and progress to the next level. Weary bodies took the field as cramps and soft tissue injuries started to rear their heads. To the boys credit, they all played on, grit their teeth and put together what I thought was their finest effort.

Hugo Portus and Miki Gronholt dominated the middle off the back of a rock solid defensive effort from our back line, in particular Xander Wallace. Chances went begging and a line call offside goal to us added to the suspense as Woodlawn’s frustration grew and the crowd grew louder. Late in the second half a costly free kick was awarded to Woodlawn just outside the box. A classy strike saw them take the lead and with minutes remaining, our comeback attempts were to little to late, losing 1-0.

The boys gave a gutsy and determined effort all day and should be incredibly proud of their tenacity and College spirit. Well done boys!

    Michael Forrester

Girls

On Thursday 12th June, our Girls Open Soccer team travelled to Lennox Head to compete in the Dio Gala Day. Despite being one of the youngest squads in the competition, the girls played four outstanding games, showcasing their skill, resilience and team spirit throughout the day.

The team faced tough competition early on, falling short in close matches against Xavier (2-0) and McAuley (2-1). However, they responded with determination and composure, bouncing back in style for their final two games. A thrilling 2-1 win against Trinity, highlighted by two clutch goals from Mya Andrews, reignited the team’s momentum. The girls capped off the day with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Woodlawn, sealed by a decisive strike from Sophie Buckley.

Every player gave their all on the field and represented the college with pride. A special mention must go to our inspirational captain, Isabelle Levings, who led with heart and grit in what was her final soccer appearance for the college before graduation. She leaves a lasting legacy of leadership and passion for the game.

We’re incredibly proud of the entire team and look forward to building on this year’s performance when we return in 2026!

    Harriet Withers

DIOCESAN NORTH JUNIOR FOOTBALL

BOYS

The Year 10 boys Soccer team travelled to Lennox Head for the Dio North Carnival. The boys played exceptionally well, coming second in their pool and then winning the semi against Trinity 2-0.

We then faced Xavier in the final. It was a tight contest which resulted in a 0-0 draw. This meant sudden death extra time. Unfortunately, Xavier slotted an early goal winning the tournament.

Great performances by some regulars such as Isaac Rose, Mikkel Gronholt, Stephan Pelikan, Aiden Jones, Harry O’Brien and Lachlan Thomas as well as from some of the boys who haven't played in the team previously.

A fun day of football, played in fine spirit.

    Stewart Grant

Girls

Our Junior Girls Soccer team represented the school at the Girls Junior Dio Soccer Gala Day held in Lennox Head on Wednesday 18th June. With a chilly start to the morning, the girls warmed into their first match against Xavier. Despite a strong performance, they were narrowly defeated 1-0.

In the second game, the girls faced Woodlawn and came away with a well-earned 1-0 victory, thanks to a fantastic goal by Indi Rawson. The team dominated much of the play and were unlucky not to add more to the scoreboard.

The final game of the day saw the girls hit their stride with an impressive 4-0 win over St Mary’s. Goals were scored by Eva Richards, Mia Polencio, Andie Staunton and Indi Rawson, highlighting the team’s excellent teamwork.

Each and every player contributed to a successful day, demonstrating great skill, spirit and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Finishing 3rd overall out of seven schools is a fantastic achievement – congratulations girls! We’re proud of your efforts and look forward to building on this success next year.

MISSING UNIFORMS

Parents this is a plea for help!

The singlet below is part of a set of uniforms which are extremely versatile for our representative teams. We use them primarily for athletics but we have used these for sports such as touch football, basketball, hockey and most recently cross country.

Over the years there has been a large number not returned and I am asking parents and students if you have a singlet at home in the bottom of you drawer can you please return then as soon as possible as our Touch Football teams are in need of these in Week 10.
